Info on handling cameras

Does anybody have any links to articles or information on handling the camera viewpoints in a 3d game (preferably focused on DirectX). I'm looking for info on setting up the viewpoint so that you can follow a character, and have the view adjust so that it is not obstructed by terrain and other objects.

I would start by googling for '3d person camera'. Also, there's an article on the topic in one of the first two GPG books.
