I see all these free sequencers and stuff, are they worth downloading? I have no experience in this stuff, but I remember a few years ago, I was at a sleepover, and my friend's older brother and some friends got on FruityLoops(almost 100% sure illegally), and made this awesome song from scratch. Can you do this with the free programs?, and if so, how easy is it?

Try naming the programs or linking us to them and maybe we'll have a chance of sharing opinions or observations.

I can tell you from experience that if you have no musical talent it's not easy with any program.

If you're good, you can make some very high quality work with the free software that's out there. If you aren't good, getting the most expensive software there is won't help you much. [wink]

It's often worth shelling out a little cash for one of the less expensive commercial offerings for the extra features and documentation that's normally provided, but if you just want to try it out the free stuff is great, and you can produce some brilliant work if you know what you're doing.

Oh, and if you do get a commercial application, make sure you actually pay for it - piracy is BAD kiddies. [wink] Some of them have demo versions (usually limited in some way) you could take a look at though.

I've made what I'd consider to be some pretty good pieces using the freeware Modplug Tracker, but a lot of people find tracker interfaces difficult to use before they've had a bit of practice. You also need to find (or create) some good samples to use with it.

I LOVE those posts, like "I have this piece of 650 dollars software.....what does it do and how do I do it?"

For some people it works, for others it doesn't.

In either case, I don't see anything wrong with having the enthusiasm to try it out. I'd say go for it. Even if it doesn't work for you, you've gained the experience of using it. :)
