Hello, I´m making a 2d game like zelda style, I´m using SDL library for the whole game, and I was wondering If I could add lightning effects to the background, like darker or brighter areas to simulate candles and torch. Is it possible? How to do it? Thanks, Victor Freire

do you mean lightning or lighting?

both are possible.

lightning can be as cool as you can imagine it,

lighting will be hard and limited.

if you use effect which use alpha, youre game propably gonna get very slow.
if you want to use more advanced effects i guess its better to use sdl and opengl.

Yes, OpenGL is good for lighting. However it's a little bit more complex than SDL. You may wish to look through the forums for the use of 'glOrtho', or pick up a SDL/OpenGL/2D library like hxRender that should simplify things for you.

Could you use a simi-transparent white circle center on sources of light with some sections of black areas for shadows; it wouldn't response to movement, but it could be simple.
