IDirectMusicPerformance8::InitAudio never returns

I've pieced together my audio code from the tutorials in the DX8 documentation. Can't go wrong, right? When I call IDirectMusicPerformance8::InitAudio it never returns; the application is frozen. I have no idea what to do about it. I was previously creating IDirectSound the old fashioned way, and all was well. I could play sounds happily. The weird thing was even that version would freeze in the audio initialization on any other computer but my own.
