As long as your smart pointer class fulfills the CopyConstructable and Assignable requirements you can use it in a vector. In particular it must be able to copy construct itself from a const reference to your pointer class and assign from a const reference.

Be careful with double templates like this though, since two '>' without any separation will be interpreted as the right shift operator (>>).
Personally I tend to insert a comment in between so that I don't accidentally remove the whitespace later on.
vector<ptr<node>/**/>
