Which API?

I've learned how to do the basic console application stuff with text in C++ but now I want to learn how to make 2D and eventually 3D. I think that I want to learn Direct X because it has all of the things I need to make a game (input, graphics, sound) but I don't know if this is the right choice. What API should I use to get started and how should I go about doing it? Thanks.

I'd start off with either SDL or Allegro with personal preference leaning more towards SDL. Both are easier for writing 2D games than using DirectX and are capable of doing fairly sophisticated things.

Not to mention with Direct* your game will be stuck in Windows world. If you want to reach a larger audience (and who doesn't), SDL is the way to go IMO.

How much larger an audience? 5%? [wink]
