libxml2 is not just for Gnome (although it may be used by it), nor is it just for Linux - in fact I've used it on Windows fairly successfully.

I used libxml and was very pleased with it. I especially liked the fact that it is absolutely TINY compared to that huge bloated POS that is Xerces (sorry if anyone is offended by that, but I hate Xerces with a passion).
