CULLMODE and trianglestrip, how??

Out of curiosity, how does setting cullmode to clockwise or counterclockwise work when you're doing a trianglestrip? If they draw the triangles by using vertices in the order you provide them ( in regular order, or indexed ) then half of the triangles will be drawn in the opposite direction( counterclockwise vs. clockwise, or vise versa). But obviously this isn't the case. Does it take vertices in the opposite order for every other triangle or something? Thanks much, Mike
