multitexturing texture splatting

Most of the tutorial/examples I've seen show how to use at most 2 textures, I'm curious how to texture splat my terrain using single pass multitexturing. Using a base starting texture (dirt) and 1 layer (grass + alpha map). One example I've run across uses the D3DTA_TEMP register.
