I'm trying to learn shaders, but really I don't even know the right questions to ask. effects files? setting up? api calls? constant table? Is it easier to start learning shaders with out .fx files? Should I buy a book?? Any idea's?

Hi there Stevieboy, how are you doing?

The Problem
How to learn shaders.

The Solution
I would say that you shouldn't worry about details... just start doing them, get either the sample framework up and running or build your own quick test framework for shaders... and use the Effect framework. It's quick and simple to setup and gets you going doing shaders.

I have some tutorials on my site regarding Vertex Shaders
I am busy working on some Pixel Shader tutorials aswell. Other than that ... just google.com for HLSL tutorials and just have fun.

I hope this helps.
Take care buddy.

Once you get up and running a little bit, you should check out the Nvidia SDK. It has tons of great HLSL shaders (literally hundreds of them), many of which are pretty advanced. Also, FXComposer is a great shader IDE, if you are looking for one.
