Definitely illegal. As well as against the Gamedev.net TOS, so if you ask for that kind of things, or if we have reason to think you are using illegally acquired software, or other assets, you'll get banned.

Those unpleasant things being said, welcome [smile]

I used to use a program called "the games factory" and then later its upgrade "multimedia fusion". These programs make game making much easier than coding in any language but you can still learn some valuable programming concepts. I recommend you try "the games factory" first. You can download a free *legal* trial version from www.clickteam.com.

Ok thanks for posting some links but later on in my game making life I want to make a game that you just drive and do stuff. I want it to be a MMO. But I also dont want to pay anything. So can I make the game that ist a a lan game only.

I mean that people in my city or my suburb can play the game with me online.
I want it to be free of if you know any progarm that gives servers for free let me know. I dont want servers holding 100 people. Maybe just 15-50 people.

Oh and this is sort of off-topic but are their any canadians on this forum?

So, no hosting.

A "simple" networked application should work so long as you know the IP of the player who will be acting as the server for the game.

Give servers for free? If you mean hosting... good luck. If you mean server code, well, as a rule there aren't whole ready-made server applications, but at least I think you can find some libraries that will help you make a game server.

Umm why would a library give out free servers? Their about books not computers. Well its worth a try. Where do I ask im my local library? I know some librarys offer free shareware games but I dunno if my library does.

And im thinking of making this game in the summer of 2006.
I just want to make some basic games then go onto this project.

Besdies I can host my game on my website at freewebs but if I can I have many friends that might let me host the game on their website.

So im thinking of doing some pixel art in games so if anyone has done pixel art can you tell me your exeperiances if its easy or not. Im going to try it anyways. Easy or not.

You're thinking about the wrong sort of library.

So I want to make a game that has lan. Will it cost me or will it be free?

I will cost you nothing to write, as you can pick up all the tools you need for free. However, it will be harder, and some people prefer to shell out some money for tools to ease the development process.

I wouldn't count on being able to make a game that complicated in 2006. Learning how to make games takes a LONG time. If you really want to make a multiplayer game, I'd suggest you start learning game programming now. Then maybe in a few years you will have the skills to make a multiplayer game.

Umm being that he does not know anything about programming according to his first post.

1. Learn To Program.
2. Learn to Network Program
3. Learn To Game Program
4. Make his game.

This path will take a while but if he wants to make a LAN game he will need all of the above.

I'm not trying to be condescending or mean but you REALLY need to learn some of the basics of game making in general. Your posts are kind of hard to understand because it is clear that you lack an understanding of lots of fundamental technology/game concepts. It certainly sounds like you want to learn though, which is the most important part.

Does anyone have any good beginner links to give this guy? Unfortunately, I do not.

I can't give any tutorials unless I know what language he wants to learn. Personally I invested in some books but he does not want to spend any money :S.

Art and image editing programs are not designed to make games.

It's more a question of skill than a question of what program to use.
For what it's worth, the Gimp is free and decent.

You see, making a game is a bit like writing a novel. Not only do you have to learn a language (e.g. Chinese) you also need to learn writing techniques (exposition, foreshadowing, avoiding clichés) ... otherwise you'll end up with a "what I did during my holidays" middle-school essay. And then, of course, you need to have a good story to tell, and be able to make it interesting.

To make a game, you need to learn a programming language (e.g. Python, C++, Java...), but you also need to learn how to actually program in that language. You need to learn how to use third-party program components (libraries) to provide the features you need (e.g. C++ doesn't deal with graphics, you'll need to learn how to use DirectX or OpenGL within the framework of a program written in C++). And finally you need to actually have the creativity to turn all that learning into a game.
