fire effects

Hello, I am writing a nice little space game, In which I have a spaceship. I want its afterburner to have some kind of fire come out of it. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? Thanks, Asaf.

Even if the ship isn't a sprite you will want to use "sprites" to make the fire effect. You will likely want to use a textured quad and set the blend mode to additive. Depending on the camera perspective you may just want a screen-aligned quad, or you may need several in various orientations. You can then make it look prettier with shaders, but one step at a time, eh?

First of all the ship isn't a sprite, it's a mesh object.
If someone could explain in more details what rjackets sugguested, It would be great.
The thing is, I never worked with sprites so the wole concept is a little blur to me.

One good way of doing nice looking fire effect is to emit billboards with animated explosion texture with alpha blending. The result will look something like this:
