DirectX Graphics Pointsize

I'm working with DirectX 9 and can't seem to globally change the point size. If I add point size to the vertex buffer by using a FVF with D3DFVF_PSIZE included then everything appears to work fine. But if I just include the line g_pd3dDevice->SetRenderState(D3DRS_POINTSIZE, 20) Then I don't get any change in point size. I know that individual point sizes override the global setting - but this occurs even when I don't include D3DFVF_PSIZE in the FVF. I'm sure it's something simple that I forgot to set - does anyone know why this might be occuring?
