Why is javascript overlooked as a possible scripting engine for games? It's a powerful language, isn't unusably slow, and people generally recognize the syntax much sooner than something like Lua.

From what I recall, it (at least the Mozilla implementation) is not as lightweight as Lua and isn't as fully featured as Python. People will only recognise the syntax much sooner if they're Java or C++ programmers, which is not usually true when talking about the intended user of a scripting language. It also seems to be significantly more awkward to bind than either Lua or Python.

I used it once. It was hard to bind so I wrote a small binding lib to do the work. I never finished it because it was very hard to maintain but if any one wants it Ill post it (it works similar to Boost.Python).

Actually, it's about equibalent for C, C++ it gets much more intricate, as does lua (I've not worked with python). Regardless, much like lua has luabind, javascript - spidermonkey has jsgen.

javascript is awesome, and I use it for most of my projects! It's already built into every browser, you can integrate 100% seamlessly with Java (directly calling methods from one side to the other) and C++ as well.

Most people don't realize that javascript is just like Scheme, with a C style syntax. It even has lambda functions. Rock!
