What kind of terrain should I use?

I thinking about making snowboard 3D game. At the begining I hit into problem. If I look in professional games like Amped 2 (XBOX) or SSX 3 (XBOX), I can't figure out (i can only guess), how terrain was made? So, my question is: - what kind of terrain they use - heightmap or mesh? Any idea? Thx, Denis

generally these types of games use some sort of subdivision surface. Look into bezier patches or bicubic patches
