GLSL Noise Performance
Hello,
Has anyone experimented with any of the noise family of functions in GLSL?
I am finding that they are not implemented or poorly implemented.
This document by Mark Kilgard notes that noise on NVidia cards returns 0 always.
http://download.nvidia.com/developer/Papers/2005/OpenGL_2.0/NVIDIA_OpenGL_2.0_Support.pdf
I have tried it on a Radeon 9600 and a Radeon X850 Pro with the same failure. The frame rate drop below interactive levels (less than one frame per second!).
If someone has used these functions sucessfully please let me know what your setup is. Thanks.
I vaguely remember somebody posting a fast (or faster anyway) glsl noise implementation on opengl.org. The forum search should find it.
I remember reading somewhere that noise() is
currently only supported on 3dlabs
hardware
(slap me if i'm wrong :)

yep, the AP has the current situation correct.
Do a google for 'simplexnoise' (also covered in the GLSL presentation from this years GDC, check the Forum FAQ for a link)
