Sound System Help Please

I don't know where to start so I'll give out the best info I can and hope to see some results. - Using Ubuntu 5.04 with the KDE Interface Kubuntu - Sound card is Realtek High Definition Audio - I have the drivers for it, the linux version of the drivers. - modprobe snd_intel8x0 and snd_intel8x0m both return no errors. Problems: - no sound - ./install to auto install the drivers starts to work but then it fails with a bunch of gibberish... - I'm a Linux Newb so I am not even sure what steps to take next. Can anyone help me?

Is it possible you sound channels are simply muted? They often are by default. Try opening kmix and see if Master, PCM, and anything else that seems to make sense is not muted and has a non-zero volume set.
My stuff.Shameless promotion: FreePop: The GPL god-sim.
Okay I loaded it up and the only drop down combo box is blank. In the task bar it gives the info "No mixer is found"

When Ubuntu boots into KDE it also says "Cannot find snd device for playback, using null device."
Try to modprobe the drivers, then type 'dmesg'. What does it say?
My stuff.Shameless promotion: FreePop: The GPL god-sim.
Which module should I modprobe? I don't know the official module name for the sound card..

Here is dmesg:

Realtek HD Audio

I cannot find any version info, but searching realtek prooves there is only 1 Realtek HD Audio driver.

You could try running alsaconf and see if it detects any soundcards. If it does it should set everything up for you.
alsaconf does not exist.
Not only does alsaconf not exist but when I open the GUI alsamixer there is no selected mixer.

Now I do believe I got the drivers fully installed.

The driver installation fails saying:
"alsaconf" is not installed.
