i want to texture my terrain using multiple layers and just use alpha maps to blend each other but my problem is on how to perfectly create an the effects lets say for example i want my base texture to have a texture of a grass and a mud combine, my idea is to use an alpha map( noise? ) for grass and an alpha map( again noise? ) for mud. But my problem is where do i create this alpha maps to create the combination effect? is there any tool available for this? I mean a tool for creating an alpha map ( perlin noise? ) texture so that i can just load this to my terrain engine? for example ill just do this: (texture grass + grass alphamap) + ( texture mud + grass alphamap ) i find it hard to generate this alpha maps by myself, since i want to place things like pathways and such any suggestions will do thanks

You can use a terrain editor that lets you paint directly onto the terrain. Try this one

Check out L3DT

Its a feature rich, large terrain generation tool.

The current version doesn't support alphamaps directly, although you can with a little effort generate them from the 'attributes map'.

However the next version is meant to support saving of alphamaps and combining to reduce the number of alphamaps needed. So just keep an eye out for when it gets released.
