shadow volumes stencil z test problem

i'm pretty new to shadows... i have got my shadow volumes working (finally), so they are extruded properly, and using the stencil right and everything. i can't figure out why the z test won't work right though. all of the scene geometry is in the z buffer when i draw the volumes into the stencil...but nothing from the occluder geometry gets masked out by there not being any z value at the spot (in mid air etc). maybe i'm missing something simple?

Have you got any reference code you're working to? I wrote an example for this site using the "Z-Pass" approach here. Looking up "Carmacks Reverse" examples should give you a "Z-Fail" approach.

Get some example code and see where you differ is probably a good idea [smile]
