Most tuturials use raw Win32 for initialising D3D that I've seeen. They only do a very small amount of Windows stuff though since D3D lets you mostly forget that you are in Windows.

Are you wanting to use D3D/DDraw, or actually write a game just using Windows functions - which would then be a proper Windows app?
