volumetric textures and tetrahedral meshes

Hi there! I'm stumbling a bit in the darkness and i was hoping one of you guys could help me out. I'm using a CAD program, Solid Edge, to generate a .igs model and I use GiD to convert this model into a tetrahedral mesh. Anyone know of something effective so that i can stick to using 2d-textures? Or do it have to look into volumetric textures? Anyone got a link to a how-to for volumetric textures? Thx in advance. /Michael
