Overlay And GL_COLOR_LOGIC_OP Question

I've recently implemented a rubber band selection tool inside my app. It works fine. However, I noticed the CPU usage went sky high when I used the rubber band box. In order to have the box update in real time, I re-drew my scene with every mouse message from windows. However, my scene is very complex and thus my CPU usage goes up. I want to draw the rubber band box without disturbing the underlying image/scene. I looked up google and came up with two possible solutions, "color logic op" and "overlay planes." Will this solve my problem? And, is one better or easier than the other? Thanks.
