Jagged polgyon edges

I have a simple plane laid over my terrain, but the shoreline has massive amounts of jagged edges. Is it something to do with depth testing? Are there any ideas on the best approach to avoiding this? http://users.monash.edu.au/~sdgun1/images/terrain_jagged_edges_problem1.png The problem seems to get worse as I move further away. I am using glPerspective(70, aspect, 1.0, 10000) Thanks for any suggestions.
