Anyone need me to *try* and do a story for their game?

If anyone want's me to help[hinder?] them with a story [I could even do it for you]: (Taken from another post) " The main thing I do is scriptwriting ('script' as in 'screenplay' [albeit very amateurishly/badly]) so if anyone need's a story done for their game or something I'd love to try and help out, bear in mind that you could probably write a 10x better story/script than I could though, but still, I'd *love* to *try* and help anyone out with that... " Would really love it. I'd even suck -- [Message edited by sunandshadow: That type of offer isn't allowed on these boards Blad3 - Ed.] Blad3...

Well, if you want people to be itnerested, no offense, dont parade around that you suck. Tell them at what level you are at at writing in a construsctive matter, as in "I am not the best out there, but i will do my best to write a great story". I think people would be more interested if you didnt boast your inexpereince.

Just being honest. Plus it was supposed to be witty. I was basically saying "I am not the best out there, but i will do my best to write a great story", but obviously is didn't work because: "I am not the best out there..." :P

That sound's kind of 'robotic', no offense. @_@

EDIT: sunandshadow thank you, I'm glad you noticed :) [Anytime Blad3, you've got talent kid, keep up the good work - Ed.]

Again, thanks for saying I have talent sunandshadow [np - I'd take you up on that "suck" offer btw... - Ed.]

"[np - I'd take you up on that "suck" offer btw - Ed.]"

EDIT#1: NO, that was just a joke sunandshadow, I find it entirely inappropriate that you'd seriously offer that to me, it's actually quite offensive. I'm initially shocked tbh, I wouldn't expect somebody from a respected and overall great community such as this to say something like that. It can take just one rotten apple to spoil the bunch, don't be that person.

It's ok, I know you're probably sorry for asking, but please reframe from any such come-on's in the future.

Blad3.

EDIT: ARGH! One day I'll find out how to get you damn smileys to work!

EDIT#2: I accept you "favour" ;)

No.

"Oops, I made a mistake in my post or double posted. What can I do? " - Er, I hope you weren't refering to this rule (uh-oh, this could get nasty...) It was done for effect. :)

[edit] "Did anyone actually think any of the above was funny?"

There should be a rule on contructive criticism

and yes 1) I enjoyed writing it, 2) I think sunandshadow may have.

Ahhh for every person who compliment's there's 10+ critque's when you're as crap as me. One day. One day...

Actually this is technically off-topic - help wanted and help offered posts don't belong in this forum, they belong in the help wanted forum.

Ok.

Sorry about the above as well, I was just a little offended, that's all. :)

But come on, it's the "writing for games section", this is where I belong.

But I do apologize, could I keep this here? I'll post a more simple version, that hopefully won't annoy anyone, there.

Hmm, it looks like someone is trying to score some serious brownie points to get a boost to their rating. [smile]

Anyway, I'm not usually in this forum, but it seems that you'll probably need to supply some samples of your work/ability to get some people seriously interested in letting you work with them.

I was really just talking about "for free", I could show them my level when they ask me to write something for them...then they can say if they like it...

Yes, I assumed you weren't expecting to be paid. However, writing, like programming, is a field of expertise in which skill and ability plays a large role in the quality of the output of an individual. I don't suspect many people want someone who has no clue what they're doing writing for their game... but neither do I suspect anyone here requires a writer with delicate mastery of language and words.

Surely you'd agree that a sample, especially one of quality, would make your offer more enticing?

Not necessarily, maybe the style of the piece, the subject matter, would put people off. If they say "I want you to write a script about so and so" I'd give it a go, they can read it (if still interested) then they can say what they think. It's better that way imo, for me and maybe for the person working on the game. This is because they'd more than likely be put off imo [by an example], but there'd be more chance, I'd maximize the chance, of them liking it if I was writing something on subject matter they'd be interested in.

Another thing "one of quality". Did you read the above (Do you think *I* have something of quality to show - no)? :D

Plus the above was, again, supposed to be a hint at my (low) level...?

TDragon, I'd seriously prefer that you didn't post post's like the one above in the furture. :) Like I say be contructive *please*. I'm not refering to the first sentence btw.

I meant quality with respect to having good organization, being easily readible and well-presented, and of course lacking any spelling or grammar mistakes.

An easy remedy would be to place a note somewhere in your post clarifying that you are in no way constrained to the particular genre in which your sample just so happens to fall, and that you are perfectly capable of writing with styles different from the one used again in your sample.

Anyway, good luck finding some work. [smile]

P.S.: You can use smilies in the forums with "[smiley_name]", of course without the quotes. To get the smiley directly above this paragraph, just use "[ smile ]" (without the spaces, which I placed there to prevent the forum software from actually displaying the smiley). The rest of the smiley IDs are enumerated in the forums FAQ.

Ok, maybe - I'm not totally disagreeing - but I'd prefer to do it my way.

Your edit: An even better way of putting it, but still...I don't want to just yet. :O

second edit, ok thank's for the info: - [totally]

TDragon, another thing: - PLEASE, please be a writer of story...?

edit#3224: Again TDragon, sorry to point this out, but:

I'm honestly not entirely sure but I think sunandshadow may have, not sure why - "Lol nice fake edit message. [grin]", [attention] from the forum moderator, might just, maybe, be an indication that *someone* found it funny: Try to be more careful next time.

Great, now nobody here likes me. :D

Emn1ty, btw, I've taken your crit and put it into practice on the "help wanted" forum where this should have originally been, so thank's.

I think people are likely to be suspicious if you don't post a sample of your writing. I would never hire someone without seeing a writing sample. If you're worried that one writing sample might turn people off because it's not what they're looking for, you should post multiple samples in different styles. And please do so in your thread in the helpwanted forum, rather than here.

I'm considering an apology for any offense given, but my question hasn't yet been satisfactorily answered. Perhaps I need to point out that my view of your initial string of posts corresponds to nilkn's. Constructively, but honestly, I tried to point it out.

As nilkn helpfully clarified, the smiley codes are in the GDNet Forums FAQ.

That about wraps this up, except for

I don't understand. Are you implying that I shouldn't criticize until I understand your position? Are you asking for me to put my own work forward? (I write on the side, yes, but technical articles and fantasy for books -- not appropriate here.)

I'll be looking foward to seeing some of your work.

Cheers,
Twilight Dragon

Actually, if you will check the writing forum faq, you will see that all fiction as well as nonfiction about writing are considered on topic for this forum. [smile]

Hm...*open mouth, insert foot*. On multiple levels. That's what I get for posting in non-programming forums, I guess. Pardon me while I try to unstick my face from this grimace...

Don't worry about it, it's a common assumption among people new to this forum that we would be strict about what's on topic and things like necroposting because the rest of gamedev is. But fortunately, since we are a small forum, with a population of more artsy types and an almost total lack of trolls, I can afford to be much more relaxed in my moderation than the rest of gamedev, which tends toward the draconian especially in flamewar-prone forums like the helpwanted forum and the lounge.

Basically as long as the members of this forum are playing nice and helping each other improve their writing skills, I am happy. [smile]
