directx...?
i have a couple questions about directx: where can i download or buy it? and do i need programing skils to use it? and is it worth the space on my computer?
DirectX can be obtained from the Microsoft website for free. And yes, you need programming skill to use it, as with pretty much everything else related to game development.
1) There are two parts to DirectX:
a. The DirectX runtimes - these allow your games to communicate with your graphics card, sound card, input devices (mouse, joystick/joypad, keyboard etc), etc. If you don't want to make your own games, then all you need is the DirectX runtime. Most Windows PC games require DirectX to be installed; many will install it automatically for you. You can download it for free yourself from: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx
b. The DirectX Software Development Kit (SDK) - this contains the DirectX runtimes and programming documentation, tools, examples, etc required to allow games (and other programs) you program yourself communicate with the various parts of your computer. The DirectX SDK is available for free from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/
2) To get much use out of the DirectX SDK, yes, you will need some programming experience in either C, C++, C#, or Visual BASIC.NET. If you want to get started with programming, the For Beginners forum on this board is a good place to start.
3) To get started with the DirectX SDK, once you have some programming knowledge, the main DirectX SDK developer site: http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/ and the FAQ of this forum http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/showfaq.asp?forum_id=10 are good places to start.
