hair

anyone know how to draw realistic hairs in openGL? I am having trouble deciding what normals to give the lines...

The fins and shells method is the best method for real time hair (as far as I know).

That may be fine for fur, but for hair longer than fur that method doesn't look or animate like you really want. The most realistic real-time hair I've seen is from the NVIDIA Nalu mermaid demo. There is an article in GPU Gems 2 that describes how that hair is rendered and the reflectance model used. I think that chapter is one of the free ones on NVIDIA's dev site. The hair presented in that article not only uses the most realistic known reflectance model (for hair) but also animates quite realisticly.
