Can cab file be read through stream?

Recommended Posts

I had put an AVI file into a cab file. But I do not want the my program to play the AVI file after it is fully extracted from cab file. This will take a lot of waiting time. I want my progam to play AVI file while it is extracting from cab file. That is, I want do the streaming on the cab file. Can I do this? Thanks. Cab or cad? I'm assuming you just mistitled the thread with this:

The .cab format supports multiple compression types, and so does AVI. They're both fairly generic formats (though AVI is worse; it relies on pre-installed codecs for any compression). So, without knowing exactly how either of your files are formatted, I'm going to assume that it's not possible. For streaming to work effectively, the file needs to be more or less stored in chronological order (if the second frame is stored near the end of the file, you'll have to stream until you get to the end of the file before you can get past the first frame), and since this file is compressed twice under formats that aren't designed to be streamed, chances are at least some of the data will be out of order (I believe lots of movie formats can't be displayed without getting data from the very end of the file). Besides, even if you could stream it perfectly (load the file exactly as you're playing it), it'd only take twice as long to extract it and then play it, and since the stream is probably going to range from bad to completely worthless, I don't predict any meaningful gain in speed.
