cutaway shader.. help??

im trying to achieve a "cutaway" effect on my wall geometry using shaders, but running into all kinds of fun.. the picture should show what im after... anyone have a clever way of doing this?

wait a minute, this can be done in a manner not unlike stencil shadows, right?

-render everything non-cutaway-capable normally
-render cutaway candidates to depth
-render cutaway volume to stencil using zpass technique (unlikely that the
camera is going to get inside the volume)
-render cutaway candidates again, where stencil == 0

have I missed something?

am i right in thinking that i can achieve the "border" by doing this again with a slightly smaller volume?
