Texture Troubles in Maya

hey all, I am beginning to get furious with maya. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I do some UV mapping, all that good stuff, and to apply the texture, I do this: Right click object>> Go to Materials >> Edit Materials, and in the window, go to the color, click on the checkered thing, apply a texture from file *the uv map*, and then I browse for it. Now, if I try to apply a different texture using the same way to something else, it sets ALL the objects in the scene to that texture, but I want all objects to have a different texture... Did that make sense? Okay, easier way: How do you apply different textures to different objects? Gragghrrhg. Thanx for the help, im stumped...
