Any good examples of 2D Isometic games with NON-tile based art?

In the same way Metal Slug games benefit from huge (seemingly) single piece backgrounds rather than obviously tiled ones.. I was thinking about somthing simular for an Iso' game... still having an unseen tile system sitting under the level to calculate/track player pos, enemy pos, walls, items, etc but with a single peice (well carved up room by room at least) background. Does any one know of(or have made them selves??)a siumlar game they could link me to for an example? I would be intresting in "test driving" the look and feel of a game like that before i commit to making one. Cheers. James.

How about the Baldur's Gate games?

Thanks, BG and Last Ninja where the only games i could think of, what i was looking for was somthing more recent than LN and not pre-rendered 3d like BG.
But its a good look, id forgot how nice it acutaly looked so thanks for the screeny'.

How do people feel about developing this kind of iso game? The end result looks nicer and while its a little added work, working with paintshop (and or max if you go for pre-rendered 3D) is easier than making your own tile editor (i made one for a 2D side scrolling game... and i'd much rather be writing a game than a tool)

The Omega Syndrome

Its an Indie game so the graphics aren't the greatest.
Explorations also supports pre-rendered maps. Here is a screenshot of a project in the works by a registered user on my website.
