Sound Effects can be pretty complicated. Before you get too time invested into the idea of recording your own sound effects, make sure the equipment costs are not prohibitive. You'll need some portable recorder of some sort, preferably with a built-in mic preamplifier. You'll need a boom, and a mic to put on the end of it. Then you'll need a way to get the sounds into your computer (other than by your internal sound card, which is no good at A/D conversion.) If buying the equipment is not a problem, then you are well on your way to devloping your own set of techniques for the particular effects you are looking for. I would also suggest investing in some respectable PC audio software such as SoundForge to play with the sounds once they are in your computer.

For Paranoia, I used a Canon DV camcorder to record the sounds. I imported via Firewire and just chopped out the video. Of course, I did massive editing with Adobe Audition afterwards. The end effect was more than good enough for a regular game. For the software side, just check out the Music Software, etc. thread in this forum.
