Is it possible to add new project templates to Visual Studio 7.1? I wanted to add an OpenGL project like DevC++ has and a few others that use some of my own frequently reused code.

Under C++ in the new project wizard. It is called "Custom Wizard"

Ouch. This look very involved. It appears that changing the template projects settings and adding source files to it doesn’t carry over into projects created using the template. It looks like I have to dive around in those text files and muddle around with stuff.

Is there no way to take an existing project and simply say "use this as a template".

Unfortunately there isn't a way to create a wizard from an existing VC++ project. However, I wrote an OpenGL project wizard awhile back and you're welcome to it if you like.
