Hey, me and a few friends are a tad bit new to the scene of game development. The name of this forum is Beginners Board so I decided to post my little introduction here. Hi, I'm Andrew MacEntee but I like to be referred to as GoodAndy online. Rockin2go, a friend of mine, have been planning on making an MMORPG for a few years now... We never did anything but a little planning, like I said. Now, we are getting a little more serious because of how many MMORPGs there are. We are being extremely serious about making this game. As of now the game is titled The Legends of Naega. It's temporary, maybe. And the company name, if you can call it that, is right now being called Deep Blue Creations. We believe we have a really good concept artist ready and an okay 3-d modeler. But it's a little early. I mainly wanted to introduce myself and tell people that I'm new and to not be so harsh on me. About our experience...
I have made a few little 2-d games in flash and a game in Multimedia Fusion. All that was pretty much small stuff compared to what's going on now. But I'm also not the programmer. I'm not that experienced in making games but I've made a few so I shouldn't have a very hard time. Plus, the members of Deep Blue Creations has already spent a few hundred dollars on books about game development, Maya, and design. We are trying our best to put this game out there.

About my logos and stuff...
I forgot to mention that I've been making web sites and logos for over four years. So, if the game sucks, the web site will not. lol The reason why I didn't mention this before was because I really don't have time to receive requests about me making some logos.

Here is the Legends of Naega logo, for right now. Please give me feedback.

Yes, it's supposed to be a little girly because we are trying to attract girls into the game. Why? Because the guys will follow.

Looks a bit washed out. Also, the flower bud looks like a shower head. Interesting though.

That's probably the best MMORPG strategy I've seen on these boards so far... Kudos & good luck :D

The flower is actually about the width of a car. It's huge. The bud is a cup that hold healing juice that you can drink or bottle it up and sale. Also, the logo is supposed to kinda' look painted so maybe that's why it looks washed out. Like it was painted a long time ago on an old sheet of paper.

Lo' I'm Andy's father Michael Willis, but I've been known as Rockin2go for the last few years.

GoodAndy and I have been designing things together for the last few years and we've worked together hand in hand, from our first website to winning silver in state we start a goal and thrive to get it done.

We've been in the gaming community for a long time now, always posting articles, reviews and tutorials to help everyone out. Flash games and Multimedia Fusion was our first foundation. Then we started making mini games and scripts for the javascript/c++ game engine Sphere RPG, programmed by aegisknight and flik.

But networking, and programming have been my strong points, I started with web development programming languages such as php, java, pearl, and javascript. Then I started messing with VB.net.. its a handy program, lets you make almost any application you can think of, but it doesn't allow us to do exactly what we wanted. Actionscript and flash had some fun in them, we were able to make small easy games just to pass the time.

C++ and the directx library solved my problems.. torque was nice.. I read enough about it that the name "Torque" became annoying but its a great indie 3d dev library. Plain and simple there's just nothing like starting from scratch.

I'm starting college in about 7 months to get my Bachelor of Science in game and simulation programming, foucusing a lot in the MMORPG realm.

Andy is one of the best graphic artists, music comps, and story writers I know, hes the pro at putting together beautiful lanscapes and scenery or little sound fx that make you go "!!!"

Kittie our MAYA 7 tech, hes currently lounging away at his minimac, 3D modeling and animation is his strong hes going to state this year on 3DMod.

Don Goodwin, this guy is simply amazing, he can draw anything with anything, give him a pen, mona lisa, give him an airbrush a recreation of every car in fast and the furious, give him a stick.. yea hes that good. He's our concept artist, though I will be paying him, he has to make a living.

Chris Piece, I grew up with this chum, he reads more books and knows more about everything than anybody. He's constantly reading a sci-fi, playing D&D, Magic the Gathering, Questing his lvl 60 in World of Warcraft or just scaring the living hell out of you, hes helping us with our story and town history all the way to our combat spells and questing system.

Anyways, this is more than just our hobby its our passion and career. The mad gaming hours and RPGS never leave us dont grow up, grow into it!

Hey! My parents live in Texarkana. When I visit over the holidays I'll look for the guys wearing the t-shirts with the girly logos. [grin]

In any case, good luck with the game.

But are they really? Started, I mean.

Well if were not wearing a girly t-shit its probally a LAN-Con 06 one, you should try to come to our gaming event this year, we expect 200+ and we already have sponsors like Radieon, Bawls, and Alienware. check out the site Andy and I run it. http://lan-con.com/ we will be selling tshirts, and making custom gaming pcs very soon on the site.

Yes, LAN-Con 06 should be a fun one. lol

Sorry about Rockin2go's great spelling. He types faster than he thinks. Which is three words a minute. lol I'm just joking with you Rockin2go.

Anyways, you won't find what you expect. We aren't even in our 20's. You'll just find that we are true gamers with a little talent. This game has to be made and it has to be completed. There isn't much right now we can show because everything that is done is temporary.

If anyone has ideas or something, please email them to me.

Question, neither of you are in your 20's, and rockengos your father? Im just curious, this sticks out to me as awkward, and very, very wrong.

Uhm...why? I assume either one is 30+ and the other ~50+, or one is a teenager and the other 30s/40s.
What is awkward and wrong?

I meant that more in jest. Good luck with your project, definate ambition there. Though I would admit, i was getting quite anxious to see a father-son game development team.

Right now we are working on a concept of the interface, out of games like Diablo 2, Eve online, EverQuest 2, World of Warcraft, Ragnarok Online, Which interface(s) do you like the most? We plan on using some nice hot keys, and a dragable snapable interface.

I have to say that when I first started reading this topic I audibly groaned. Even in the short time that I've been here, alot of people have tried to start an MMO.

However, after reading more, I've begun to build some real hope for this project. The fact that you actually are recruiting a team of people(including artist, people seem to forget them sometimes) really gives me some hope. Often times its like "Hey! My friend and I are going to make a great MMO!" That just doesn't work.

Just curious, but how are you going to pay for bandwidth/hosting costs?

Good luck and I agree with the compliments on the logo!

Actually bandswidth is something that I have definetly thought through, i have a number of choices for this one, first: I plan on getting a dedicated server by time we get a good beta release for us devs to test, though I have to pay annually for this hosting I get unlimited bandswidth and 80gb space with unlimited SQL transfer.

Second I am sitting in a room with a T1 connection, this is a private connection for a small class in my school, the internet here is barely touched at all, excpet by about 3 people at a time.

Third, my college I'm starting at hosts dev projects for students, it's a great offer and they supply this because of the MMOG's is an actual course in my degree.

Fourth, if worse came to worse I would have to call up my old man, he deals with a lot of multimillion deals lately and knows a lot of people that would invest after i graduated from college. I try not to depend on him that much because like I said doing things yourself just feels a whole lot better in the end.

So far the connection problems aren't there. We believe we can finish this project without many problems. We are serious gamers and very serious developers that have done many things and finished them. I can't promise that we will finish this project because of how many always say they will when they don't, but I can say that this will be one of the best efforts for a very nice indie MMORPG.

I just want to say something for no reason...I love cel shading. :D

Don't worry; only Fruny eats people. [wink] But all kidding aside, your project sounds like it's doing great so far. GDNet has many successful indie developers, so you may well be in good company when you finish. Best of luck!

GD net seems like a really nice/more mature community, I'm glad im not seeing any thing like "1 pwn j00 n00b!" I try to be helpful and assist people the best I can, hopefully Fruny wont eat me =).

Anyways, We want to make sure our game is cross platform compatable, mainly mac and windows, I don't currently have a mac but out modeler uses a mac. Directx 9.c is a Win/Mac compatible library and its really top of the line so we descided to use it. I'm looking for a reference sheet or something to make sure our c++ API templates are mac friendly.

Yeah, I was very surprised at the community. A lot nicer than I expected. I'm used to Gaming World, Gunbound, and a few other crappy communities. I wish other communities were like this. Hopefully, Legends of Naega will have a very nice and a very helpful.
