copying textures

i was considering it at one stage but i want to leave my options open because it isn't probably isn't supported in "older hardware" and macs either from what i've heard

Well if you have new enough hardware FBO's are supported on macs now I think. I would go with them. So far FBO's have been great for me in performance and ease of use.
