how would i copy one texture into another?

simply, you cant.
You could render it and copy it to another texture however.

why do you need to?

i'm try to create a motion blur effect
I think you are going to want to take a look at the accumlation buffer...

i was considering it at one stage but i want to leave my options open because it isn't probably isn't supported in "older hardware" and macs either from what i've heard
accumlation buffer is much slow...I recommend the render-to-texture technology.

Well if you have new enough hardware FBO's are supported on macs now I think. I would go with them. So far FBO's have been great for me in performance and ease of use.
