Removing Excess Polygons

I am curious as to how one would remove excess polygons from a bsp tree. I have already done csg on all the brushes before creating a bsp tree, but now I still have many polygons which would be never be seen. I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but i'm sure you've noclipped outside a quake3 level before and you can see right in, but looking at in the editor in the same position you wouldnt be able to.
