I was just wondering if there is an easy way to generate an image of characters like the one used in Lesson 17, short of manually making one in an image editing program?

There sure is, have a Google for Bitmap Font Generators and you should get a few hits there. Might I be so bold as to offer one that I wrote a while back? Here's a link to it.
