[java] Speed of java applet

What special optimizations would have to be added to an applet to create a simple java adventure game, similar to the old 16 color Sierra games, but running in a resolution of 500x500? Besides using a double buffer, would the regular commands be fast enough?

If you can accept that your applet only runs under Windows, then for any applet games I recommend usig WildTangent (free).

It is a 3D engine, but good for applets. And gives you enough speed so you don''t have to worry about speed details.
