I am looking for a very simple 2D board game tutorial or public domain source code. I am interested mostly in how a game like Checkers (for example) would be presented, saved to disk, loaded from disk, and transmitted over the internet. Please just a simple game with basic graphics...no DirectX if it can be avoided...just muddies the waters for me. I am looking for a tutorial that helps show or explain these basic game elements for a 2D board game. C# is preferred, or C++.

Someone from the SDL.NET forums posted about his progress he made on a chess game he was working on in C# and SDL.NET: SDL.NET Chess. I don't know if he's still working on it, or has released the source, but here's the forum post on the matter.
