How to convert skinned meshes to progressive skinned meshes correctly with D3DX functions?

Hi there, maybe you can change the mesh data on its own? Get the mesh of the skinned mesh and change that, then save it back again or something?
i'm trying to split the mesh into subsets with different bone combinations and handle them separately.
