How to set up Lua

I have never used Lua before, and I just downloaded the latest version of it - 5.0.2. I'm a little confused on what to do with all of the files, and how to set it up so i can begin writing scripts, can anyone help me get set up? Thanks for any help given.

Thanks for your help Gaenor, however I have already read this article, I was more more curious on how to set up Lua as in the compiler and the interpretor using the files that are given in the 5.0.2 folder.

Using Lua is pretty simple if you make sense of using the stack offsets.

There are plenty of tutorials across the web and gamedev. I can't remember the location but there's a site with Visual Studio projects already setup.

I have a more advanced question for experienced users.

Does anyone have experience using metamethods __index with light user data?

I'm trying to override the "." operator to do a lookup into my property system.

__newindex works.

__index does not.
