Lightmaps in Quake III

how are the lightmaps in quake III done? is really really fast but and it looks good. how to they manage this?? how to they get this resolution and this performance... any ideas?

The lightmaps are created with q3map2 and are quite small (usual 128x128 or 256x256). But a bigger size is not needed, interpolation looks good.

The lightmaps are stored in the .bsp format and then converted to Lightmaps from there.

Because of using linear interpolation the light maps look good yes.
