Texture precision

Can anyone tell me the precision of a texture stored as GL_FLOAT, and does the texture have the same precision and range as a standard float and as a float on the GPU?(Intel CPU, Geforce 7800) I think I have an issue with precision but I do not know the available number ranges on the GPU (and texture). Thanks in advance
