Select objects in Space

hello everyone, I have a question to ask about selecting objects in space. I am working on WIN32 API using OpenGL. My question is how can I select the objects in space, I know there are ways to do it one is using "GL_SELECT" and "gluPickMatrix()" function to do so and the problem also can be solve by using ray tracing, however, using ray tracing could be expensive. I would like to use the "gluPickMatrix or GL_SELECT" but just can't figure it out how to use such functions, so would anyone kindly can help me or give me some examples on how to do selecting objects in space. Thank you all very much~!
