I need a c++ compiller that's less than 5MB big. I tried digital mars but I don't understand how to set it up properly. Can anyone help me set it up or recomend another program under 5MB?

that's probably small enough but you'll have to learn makefiles and command line compiling (probably plenty of docs on the same site). Remember however, that depending on what you are compiling you may need much more than 5mb of space for all the libraries that you need to compile against and such.

Why do you need one? Packing a modern C++ compiler and it's libraries down to 5 MB won't be easy, although not impossible. And you certainly won't get a comfortable IDE to work in.

There are quite a few "small" modern C compilers however, such as TinyCC. One of Microsoft or Borlands ancient (DOS-based) C++ compilers would probably fit too, although you certainly wouldn't get any modern language features.

Maybe you could get a Unix shell to play with instead?

The compiler itself takes 60Meg of disk storage. The package includes not only the gcc (C) and g++ (C++) compilers, but also gdb (the debugger), bash (a Unix-style command shell), make, and a whole host of related tools. In fact, you're really getting a pretty comprehensive Unix emulation package.
