I want a way to import via C++ a model of 3dstudio max's format or some others, Milkshape, blender3d, etc. I dont want a "loader" or some external bit of software, I want to write my own so that my program can load its own models as I see fit. Is there a tutorial for the popular file formats as well as descriptors for those formats ?

Well, for finding specs, Wotsit is probably your best bet, there is a tutorial for Milkshape at NeHe.

However, .max files in 3d studio max, .mb in Maya or .scn in XSI are propietary, you wont find the specs, and even if you do, those files contain more information than required for a game, you may have some luck using COLLADA, but still, its more than needed, and meant for data exchange between 3D applications.

You'll be better off exporting your models to .x, the many iterations of .mdl, milkshape or your own brew.

or use maxscript and create your own exporter.

I did this, MAX even ship with a tutorial to write a simple exporter...
Writing your c++ loader class is a walk in the park too... :D
