Best Graphic card for OpenGl
Hello everybody.
Before Any thing I must say I am not sure where I had to post this question so if it does not belong to here feel free to move it.
My question is that what would be the best GPU for OpenGL under Linux ?
I also would like to know what are the other companies apart from Nvidia, ATI, S3 that design their own chip for DirectX or OpenGL?
Thank you
The Best GPU: nVidia 7800GTX 512
Actually Intel creates graphic processors too, but to my best knowledge they are integrated.

Well, I should change my question a little bit, What is the best value for money GPU ?
Also is there any other company that create GPU and could compete with Nvidia and ATI ?

Matrox might, but they're more on the video editing side of things I believe. My friend has a 7800GTX and he says is simply tears everything apart. The best value GPU that you'll probably get is the one with the fastest RAM (256MB is fine for just about any public game) and the fastest core clock. You'll see other 7800's for cheaper, but the more expensive one's are lots faster. I've sen one with a 625 mhz processor (imagine putting an extra processor on your mobo purely for graphics). Anything else, just ask.
nVidia has the better drives for OpenGL as I know. If you need a GPU for gaming the 6800 is a good option. It supports shader model 3.0 and is really fast [enough]. For more serious application there are other GPUs called Quadro FX(and FireGL from ATI) I think. I do not know much about them.

since no one else has, I think i'll recomend the NVIDIA 6600GT. Its a decent performer and its cheap! Also, hands down NVIDIA's OpenGL drivers are the best of the consumer grade & mainstream cards. Also their linux drivers are quite mature, and they took the initiative to make them, rather than ATI who seem to simply enjoy playing catchup (both in Desktop drivers, Windows GL drivers and now it seems Linux too)
Interesting.
But none of you talked about other companies who might have the potential to become one of the good ones in future.
I do myself like Nvidia (have them on my desktop and laptop) but I heard FireGL from Nvidia has been designed for OpenGL and I saw OpenGL drivers for Linux on their website.
Does anybody know about this ?

You didn't ask for future potential... Btw how do you gauge items not yet in existance? *shrug*
ATI drivers under linux are horrific for the most part to get working (least from my experience a lot of other peoples). So that pretty much limits you to nVidia for performance AND price. The others are not up to par.

well, for opengl development based on my experience i'ld say go for nVidia they make CORRECT behaviour drivers (please note the CORRECT BEHAVIOUR thing)although lately they aren't the best if you want a card just for playing games because you need to download alot of patches and fixes for nearly every game. while i heard that ati opengl support is getting better i still prefer nvidia. the last ati card i developed on was an ati 8500 it had some nice features at the time but still there was nvidia's geforce4 4600ti which also had a different set of nice opengl features. now i develop on a geforce 6600gt pci-express version, that i got about 6 months ago back then it was a nice value/price and i still like it though i need to get alot of patches, and fixes for games but that's not a problem for me because i don't game much now.
and yeah there are creative labs they make specialized opengl hardware very advanced but they are kinda expensive besides they are mostly made for special purposes like fast wireframe rendering which is something a designer/modeler would be interested in more than a game developer. besides a game developer should develop on a card that's going to be used by the gamer, may be more than one if you consider minimum and recommended graphics cards.
one more thing with opengl is that as the features of your graphics engine grow the more you're gonna be using opengl extensions and some times you may want to use vendor specific extensions which will require you to have both nvidia and ati cards.
IMHO i think the best GPU is the best for you depending on your game if you're making the next DOOM/UNREAL then i'ld say go for a 7800GTX or a lower profile card if you're doing lower profile graphics but i 'ld stay away from the geforce 5 series, a geforce 6600xx is a good bet as your lower end.
thats just my opinion,
hope i helped

I don't run Linux, but I have a friend who does and had an ATI card. He said that their drivers (in general) for Linux were really bad. He switched to an nVidia card and become much happier.
I use an nvidia card(6200) and am quite happy with it. It seems to run anything I throw at it, but not necessarily at super-ultra-high settings. For a budget card, it works quite well and I haven't had any problems driver-wise.
