Is there any negative impact for calling delete on a null pointer. In other words, if you don't know if a pointer has an object allocated to it, should it be written like this (which is how i've always done it), if (pointer != NULL) delete pointer; or like this, delete pointer. I know this is a pretty trivial question but just wondering what the regular practice is for this in C++. Thanks, -Mark

The null pointer is a special case, which is guaranteed to be safe. Other pointers which don't point to deletable memory should not be deleted; that can cause bad bugs.
