Does anyone know of any resourses on developing clustered servers (the server software side, not the hardware side)?

We rolled our own, because the existing solutions (ACE, MPI, etc) are all intended for a domain that's different from real-time distributed simulation, which is what we do.

You might want to look into the Beowulf Linux clustering solution as an example; it uses open source so you can go read whatever parts of the source interests you. Whether this is appropriate for your problem depends on the problem domain/requirements.
