Hi Clearly,

for general information, 3D Studio File Toolkit at support.discreet.com (free registration) will be your choice; additionally you could try "lib3DS" (located at sourceforge.net, IIRC).

3DS files are a popular choice for models and there are many resources out there which will help you understand the format and to either write you own loader or code/libraries which you can use or adopt into your own project, all you need to do is spend some time doing a bit of research on the subject.

Here's the link for lib3DS: clicky.

The download package will include all instructions for installation and examples with how to use it, there's also the online API documentation which should be the first place you look to answer any questions you have about the library.

Clearly,

another resource you may try for getting started with this stuff is gametutorials.com - this site has a nice tutorial on loading 3DS files, and since this tutorial is very easy i would recommend this tutorial as your first step.

Unfortunately those tutorials aren't free anymore, after a quick look I found that it's now going for $20 (USD) just for the OpenGL version. There are plenty of other 3DS loaders floating around on the 'Net, a few minutes with Google should yield a few which can be used as a reference.
